At some point, most people experience back pain either upper, which includes the neck and shoulders or pain in the lower back. Lower back issues can include sciatic pain, degenerative or bulging discs and arthritic conditions among others. Upper back pain can be from pulled muscles or other soft tissue injuries or arthritic or degeneration of the discs. The quality of a patient’s well being can be severely impacted by back, neck and shoulder pain regardless of it’s origin. Acupuncture can help with back pain from all sources by increasing the circulation to the area and releasing tight muscles and trigger points which then encourages healing. Acupuncture also works to relieve pain by releasing the body’s own natural pain killer also known as endorphins.
Many people who come for acupuncture treatments to help alleviate their back pain find that they feel better quickly, particularly when Acupuncture Physiatrics or Trigger Point Acupuncture is used (this type of treatment is explained in it’s own segment on this site). A treatment plan will be made according to how long the patient has been in pain, the origin of their pain (injury, degeneration etc). Everyone responds differently but usually the patient will feel the results after only a few treatments.
